Why Is Readability Important?

Texts that are easy to read are understood more quickly, stay in the reader’s memory longer, and keep them engaged. Especially for blog articles, scientific papers, or business documents, it’s crucial that the content is clear and understandable.

Which Values Does the Readability Checker Analyze?

Our tool uses three proven readability scores to evaluate how understandable a text is. Each index has a specific method for calculating a text’s level of difficulty.

Flesch Index (Flesch Reading Ease Score)

The Flesch Index assesses how easy or difficult a text is to read. The scale ranges from
0 to 100 – a high score means the text is easy to understand, while a low score indicates more complex language.

  • 90 – 100: Very easy to understand (e.g., children’s books)
  • 60 – 70: Fairly easy to understand (e.g., newspaper articles)
  • 30 – 50: Challenging (e.g., scientific texts)
  • 0 – 30: Very difficult to understand (e.g., legal or academic papers)

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level indicates which
school level is required to understand the text. The value corresponds to the U.S. school system:

  • 5 – 6: Easy to understand, suitable for middle school students.
  • 8 – 10: Moderately difficult, corresponding to an adult reading level.
  • 12+: Difficult, commonly found in scientific or legal texts.

The higher the value, the more education and experience are needed to understand the text without difficulty.

SMOG Index (Simple Measure of Gobbledygook)

The SMOG Index was specifically developed for scientific and medical texts. It analyzes the number of
multisyllabic words and provides an estimate of how challenging a text is.

  • SMOG 6 – 9: Easy to understand, suitable for everyday communication.
  • SMOG 10 – 14: Moderately difficult, often found in journalistic and academic texts.
  • SMOG 15+: Very difficult to understand, commonly found in specialist publications and studies.

A high SMOG value means there are many complex and lengthy words in the text, making it more difficult to read.
